ICOMOS Interpretation Conference: Heritage Interpretation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

CANCELLATION NOTICE

It is with great regret that the Board of the ICOMOS International Committee for the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites (ICIP) announce the cancellation of the 2020 conference in Angkor. This decision has been difficult, but it was made in light of the many uncertainties in the world at the moment due to COVID-19 and the impossibility of predicting what the rest of the year will entail.

Thank you to everyone who submitted an abstract; we had a very enthusiastic response. As soon as the COVID-19 crisis is over we'll investigate running a conference, perhaps again in Angkor. We will also see if we can do a virtual event of some kind this year; we will keep in touch.

Board of the ICIP

The ICOMOS International Committee for the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites (ICIP) is pleased to announce the ICOMOS Interpretation 2020 Conference at Angkor, Cambodia. The conference will take place on September 28th and 29th with pre-conference tours on September 26th and 27th.

The ICIP Board is honored to be partnering with APSARA National Authority (Authority for the Protection of the Site and Management of the Region of Angkor). This conference will be just prior to the 2020 ICOMOS General Assembly in Sydney.

THEME

The theme of the conference is Heritage Interpretation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Presentations and conversations will draw on both the guiding frameworks of the UN Agenda 2030/Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ICOMOS Charter for the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites. We are seeking presentations that encourage discussion and examples of best practices and case studies:

• How does the Interpretation Charter relate to the UN SDGs?
• How can sustainable tourism support world heritage sites by using interpretation in both traditional and non-traditional ways?
• Case studies that showcase successful projects of interpretation and sustainable tourism working together resulting in capacity building, job creation, community development, and best practices in interpretation.
• What is the current evolution of interpretation within sustainable development? Does it have a role? Is it effective? What more is needed?

We invite presentations in a variety of formats, including: 1) formal paper 2) TEDx talk 3) Panel presentation & discussion / Roundtable, and 4) Poster Session. We are seeking lively, relevant, and engaging presentations that address important contemporary issues.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

We are honored to have two keynote speakers for this exciting event. Dr. Ege Yildirim of ICOMOS Turkey is the ICOMOS Focal Point for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. She will talk about Heritage Interpretation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals – the overall conference topic.

Sok Sangvar is Deputy Director General for APSARA National Authority. He will talk about Interpretation as a Tool for Managing Mass Tourism.

Deadline

Deadline for proposals: Monday, 6 April 2020. These proposals will receive the highest priority for review. We will continue to review papers after this date if slots are available. Successful presenters will be notified by Wednesday, 29 April 2020.

FULL DAY TOUR TO THE ANGKOR TEMPLES

In the morning, start to discover the South Gate of Angkor Thom with two rows of its huge statues of demons and gods depicting the churning of the ocean of milk arranged on both sides of stone bridge and Bayon temple, a forest of heads. Continue to visit the Terrace of Elephants, which used to be a base for the king’s grand audience hall; Terrace of Leper king supposed that it was a terrace housed the royal crematory.

Then, visit an amazing view of Ta Prohm temple, one of the most beautiful and famous temples in the area, as it has been (almost) untouched since it was discovered and retains much of its mystery. Ta Prohm is the perfect lost temple in the jungle, Strangler figs and Kapok trees entwine themselves around the ruins of Ta Prohm. Their roots burst apart even the thickest of walls, yet their clinging embrace prevents the walls' collapse.

In the afternoon, visit Angkor Wat temple, the most balanced, the most harmonious, and the most perfect Khmer temple. It shows Khmer art, which reached the height of it glory in the 12th century. The temple was built by king Suryavrman II and dedicated to god Vishnu. Climb up Bakheng hill to have bird’s-eye view of the sunset, Angkor Wat and western Baray.
Note: During the visit of the Bakan tower of Angkor Wat temple, visitors are required to wear proper attire, covering shoulders and knees as this temple is still considered as a sacred site (no shorts, miniskirt or short trousers). Children under twelve years old are not allowed to climb up this tower. It will be closed on the Buddhist Sabbath Days, the Buddhist religious days, four days a month in accordance with the Lunar Calendar.

OPTION A – TRADITIONAL LIFE / TONLE SAP LAKE

In the morning, transfer to a local market in a local village and continue to Kampong Pluk floating village, including a paddle boat trip to visit forest floating village (2 persons per boat).
Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Also called Boeung Tonle Sap, it has one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems. There are different species of wildlife in and around the lake, which helped to sustain and grow the ancient Khmer civilization. It's also famous for its fascinating local communities and their floating villages.

Return to your hotel.

OPTION B.1 – ANCIENT TEMPLES : BENG MEALEA & ROLOUS GROUP

In the morning, departure from your hotel to visit Beng Mealea temple. It was built as a Hindu temple, but there are some carvings depicting Buddhist motifs. Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit Rolous Group of Angkorian monuments included Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong.
After that., visit of Bakong Pagoda.
This pagoda is also located in Angkor, built in the ninth century under the reign of King Indravarman I. The pagoda is one of the most important monuments of Hariharalaya - the famous ancient city in history, and the local people used to call it Roluos. The beauty of Bakong architecture expresses in the way it was built towards the mountainous temple and pagoda style.

OPTION B.2 – ANCIENT TEMPLES & JUNGLE : KBAL SPEAN & BANTEAY SREI

In the morning, departure for the visit of Kbal Spean, "The river with thousand lingas". An enchanting walk on shady paths leads to the thousand linga river whose bed is carved with divine representations. The sacred water of Kbal Spean thus fed the irrigation devices of the plain of Angkor.
Then continue the road to Banteay Srei.
Lunch at a local restaurant near Banteay Srei.
Visit of Banteay Srei temple, the fabled pink temple of women, so called because it is made of pink sandstone and considered a tribute to the beauty of women.
Note: During the visit of Banteay Srey temple, visitors are required to wear proper attire, covering shoulders and knees as this temple is still considered as a sacred site (no short, miniskirt or short trousers).
Visit of Banteay Samre, built in the third quarter of the 12th century. It consists of a central temple with four wings preceded by a hall and accompanied by two libraries.
